DELORES Y. BRADY

80, 2411 Stone Drive, Johnson City, TN, lovingly known as "Miss Toot" entered into rest on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at her home. Delores was a lifelong resident of Johnson City, TN, was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church, attended Langston High School and was a loving family matriarch.

She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Fred and Sultina Smith, her husband, Eddie Brady, and a son David R. Young.

She leaves to mourn her passing; a son, Michael (Sarah) Young of Bristol, TN, granddaughter, Alicia (Kenny) Dalton, of Washington, DC,, grandson, Jason Young, Buffalo, NY great grandsons, David Gibson and Idris Young and great granddaughter, Dia Dalton.

She also leaves behind several loving nieces and nephews, her nieces, Brenda Long, Jo Rhyans, Martha Salters, Kathy Stephens, Angelitti (Joe) Bradley, all of Johnson City, TN, Carol Bridwell, Greenville, SC, and Tina Smith, New York, NY, her nephews, William Long, Ricky Smith, Johnson City, TN, Phillip Bridwell, Atlanta, GA, Douglas Smith, New Orleans, LA Eric Smith, Woodridge, VA and Harry Smith, Jr., Brooklyn, NY. She also leaves a host of grand nieces and nephews along with numerous beloved friends.

FUNERAL SERVICES

 will be held at 12:30 PM, Friday, December 11, 2009 at Friendship Baptist Church, 522 West Main St. with Dr. C. H. Charlton, Pastor officiating. Burial to follow at the V. A. National Cemetery, Mountain Home. The family will receive friends form 11:30 AM until 12:30 PM prior to the services at the church. Friends may visit at the residence at anytime. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association.

ARTHUR Y. LIVINGSTON

 

            I have created you and cared for you since you were born. I will be your God through all your lifetime, yes, even when your hair is white with age, I made you and I will care for you. I will carry you along and be your savior. Isaiah 46:3-4

 

            Arthur Y. Livingston, called  “AY” by his friends, 283 Adam & Corby Road, Limestone, TN entered into rest on Wednesday, December 2, 2009, at the age of 85, at the V. A. Medical Center, Mountain Home, after a short  illness. He was a native of Blackwater, VA. He was born October 10, 1924 and was the youngest of eleven children.  He served in the United States Army during World War II. His hobbies were cars, working in his garden and watching old westerns.

            He was preceded in death by his father and mother,  John Peter and Laura Livingston, seven brothers, Andrew Livingston, Samuel Livingston, Robert Livingston, Roscoe Livingston, Denver Livingston, E. J. Livingston, and Oakland Livingston, three sisters, Mrs. Blanche Carter, Mrs. Grace Farley and Mrs. Ethel Elizabeth Eseron.

            Survivors include; his children, Arthur (Hazel) Livingston, Washington, DC, Sylvia (James) Banks, Bristol, VA, Saundra (Anthony) Fisher, Nashville, TN, Sheen Griffin, Rochester, NY, Linda (David) Workman, Anthony Livingston, Audrey (Tina) Livingston, Angela (Arthur) Sanders, Pamela Livingston, Burl Livingston, Denise Livingston, a step daughter, Mary Jane Watson, all of Johnson City, TN, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

             will be held at 12:30 PM, Monday, December 7, 2009   at New Zion Faith Center, 127 Garden Drive, Johnson City,   Pastor E. E. Widby, Sr. officiating. Burial   to  follow  at the V. A. ERNEST LEE McKINNEY. SR.
 
age 86, of 119 North Lincoln Avenue, Jonesborough peacefully departed this life on November 30, 2009, under the care of Adventa Hospice while surrounded by family and friends.

            Born November 26, 1923 in Chesney, SC, he was the second eldest child of the late Jaffer Nell and Corrie Dodd McKinney. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Robert McKinney and Charles Hubert McKinney; three sisters, infant Margaret Ann McKinney, Eula Mae McKinney, and Frances McKinney Alexander.

            He graduated salutatorian from Langston High School in 1943. He continued his studies at Swift Memorial Junior College, Rogersville, TN, and graduated with top honors in May 1945. In June 1947 he graduated from A & I State College in Nashville, TN having earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He later earned his Master of Arts in Education in Aug. 1964 and was awarded an honorary doctorate degree of the letters of humanities in May 2006, both from East Tennessee State University.

            Ernest was a member of Bethel Christian Church, Jonesborough. He has served as an elder, Sunday school teacher, church treasurer, trustee, Christian Men’s Fellowship, church clerk, member of the adult choir, and men’s chorus.

             

            In addition to his wife of 59 years, Marion Birdwell McKinney, he is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Ernest. L. “Buttons” (Brenda Spencer) McKinney Jr., Nashville, TN and Kevin B. (Kimberly Sells) McKinney, St. Louis, MO; a nephew, William E. Alexander, Sr., Waverly, TN; niece-in-law, Mary Henderson Alexander, Johnson City; one grandson, Raymond E.A. McKinney, Nashville; three granddaughters and one grandson-in-law, Zhay N. McKinney, Eren McKinney (Demetri) Carter, all of Nashville, Courtnie D.T. McKinney, of the home; three great-grandchildren, Nashville; one brother, Clarence E. (Jean) McKinney, Johnson City; three sisters, Lollie McKinney Surratt, Patricia McKinney Bizzell, both of Johnson City, and Clara McKinney Shepherd, Phoenix, Arizona; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

will be held Friday, December 4, 2009 at 11AM at Bethel Christian Church, 701 Depot St., Jonesborough, TN, Pastor Vincent Dial, officiating.  Interment will follow in New Victory Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Charles D. Crowe, Harvey Zachary, Paul Rice, Charles E. Ryans, Herb Henderson, Vernon Bradley, and Robert Hall. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM, Thursday, December 3, 2009 at Bethel Christian Church, Jonesborough, TN. Open visitation will be held at the church from 1 PM to 5:00 PM. HORACE COUSIN, JR.  

age 90, of 215 W. Holston Avenue, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, November 21, 2009, at the VA Medical Center in Mountain Home.  He was born October 14, 1919, in Hogansville, Georgia, to Anna and Horace Cousin, Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Dorothy Jones, Ruby Conner and Bertha Cousin Reynolds, and one brother, Cecil Cousin.

 

Horace was a member of Grace Temple Eternal Life Center, where he sang in the Men’s Choir. He served in the United States Army, where he received a Bronze World War II Victory Medal for service in the European African Middle Eastern Theater.

 

He worked for Ford Motor Company in Detroit. He also worked in Knoxville before moving to Johnson City, where he married the love of his life, Julia Mae Cousin.

 

“Mr. Horace” was a wonderful father and loved all of his children, especially his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

 

He is survived by his wife, Julia Mae Cousin; daughters, Hattie (Tommy) Barkley, Bertha Swepson, and Pat Linden; sons, Samuel D. (Dana) Stuart, Willie James Stuart, and Charles Edward (Ann) Stuart; special niece, Linda Cousin; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

             will be held at 12:30 PM, Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at Grace Temple Church, Eternal Life Center, 208 Garden Drive, with Pastor Mark Redd, officiating. Burial to follow at the V. A. MARTHA E. MALONE

 age 83, of 1402 East Holston Ave. entered into rest on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at Asbury Place. She was born January 14, 1926 in Mountain City, TN, was the daughter of the late Joseph and Maggie Anderson Burkett. Later she relocated to Johnson City for about 10 years, then to Warren. Ohio where she lived for 35 years and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where she worked along with Mary Bledsoe as a kitchen assistant and as a member of the Church Bowling Team. She returned to Johnson City after the death of her husband and became a member of Grace Temple Church, Eternal Life Center, where she was a faithful member until her health failed her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles G. Malone two sons, Robert G. Malone and Charles D. Malone and a daughter, Bettye J (Jackson) Baker and special friend, Mary Bledsoe.

She leaves to cherish her memories four daughters, Susie (Charles) Rollins, Nancy (David, Sr.) Dugger, Annie M. Hale and Brenda J. Elmore, all of Johnson City, TN a son, James R. Malone, Johnson City, TN 21 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and 13 great, great, grandchildren, a sister in-law, Mabel Goins a host pf nieces, nephews and cousins. Special friends, Nancy Goins, Boston, MA and Mary Goins, Bristol, TN.

JOSEPH BOOKER MORRISON, JR
 
    Joseph B. Morrison, Jr. age 66, of 128 Laurel View Road, Jonesbourgh, TN was born on October 13,1943. He is preceded in death by his mother and father LaNorma Howard and Joseph B Morrison Sr. He was a graduate of Langston High School. After graduating from High School Joseph proudly served  his country as a member of the United States Airforce. He received an Airman Medal of Heroism and several commendations. After serving his tour of duty, he returned to Johnson City and  Major in Journalism at East Tennessee State University an sucessfully earned his Bachelor Degree. After pursing his major in Journalism , he worked for Tennessee Eastman, for 15 years, Joseph retired from GMAC for 35 years where he was a  Finacial Advisor. After retiring he enjoyed fishing, gardening, photographing and spending quality time with his grand children.  Joseph to always to be the best at what can be done, to him life was to always open to suggestions. Our father will be remember as a person that gave advice,encouragement to all who wanted his guidance and his knowledge. He also served as a deputy sherriff in Washington County, TN.
 
 He leaves to cherish his memory, his children, sons Brian K. and wife, Chestena Morrison of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Darryl E. Morrison of Johnson City:) (daughters) Vonda K. and husband, Harrison M. Arnett of Clarkville, Tennessee,Tina D. Morrison of Johnson City: brother, Steven Morrison of  Clinton, Maryland,  Grandchildren, Khalil Morrison, Devont'e Morrison, Jalen Morrison, Miracle Morrison, all of Johnson City,  Alonzo Arnett, Monica Arnett, Joseph Bowles, Torrance and wife, Jamie Morrison, (great grand daughter) Tamaya Morrison.

James David Thomas, Brooklyn, NY, entered into rest on Friday, October 23, 2009 in Brooklyn, NY.  He was a East New York High School graduate, working in different fast foods, until his health became to much for him.
 
 
Survivors include; his mother, Mary Thomas, formerly of Mountain City, TN now, Johnson City, TN, two brothers, Michael Thomas, (Toni) and Jeffrey Thomas (Julie), a sister Michelle Thomas Freeman (Rich), MD, several cousins, neices, nephews and friends.

ALONZO  CLARK

 died Tuesday, September 29,  2009 at Johnson City Medical Center, after suffering severe head injuries in a single car collision last Monday in Banner Elk, NC. He was a Lees-McRae College track and field member. The sophomore from Fredricksburg, Va., was a sprinter on the Bobcat track team, helping guide  them to the first Conference Carolinas track and field championships last spring. 

Alonzo Clark is survived by his mother, Cheryl Cook, father, Alonzo Clark, Sr. and siblings, Felicia, Ben, and Michelle.

SERVICES

He will be returned to Fredericksburg, VA for funeral services on Saturday, October 10, 2009.

DAVID LEE FORNEY, SR.
 

age 65, of 11 Brooklawn Court, Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, at his home.  David retired from Tennessee Eastman after close to thirty years of service.  After retiring, he enjoyed fishing and boating until his health began to decline.  Fondly known as “Paw Paw” and “Uncle David”, he thoroughly enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  David was an Elder at Bethel Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Jonesborough, Tennessee.

 

He is preceded in death by his father and mother, William and Ray Jamerson Forney.  He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Carla Forney; sons, David Lee Forney, Jr. and Timothy (Malaika) Perry of Johnson City; daughters, Julia (Jeffrey) Thomas of Jonesborough and Melissa Morrison of Gray, Tennessee; brothers, James (Rose Marie) Forney and Richard Forney; sister, Gwendolyn (Richard) Pierce, all of Greenville, Tennessee; mother-in-law, Loretta Smith of Johnson City; twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

 

Special recognition and thanks to the staff at Fercenius Dialysis Center for the care and support they gave David.

SHIRLEY TAYLOR
 
 608 Bradley Street, Elizabethton, TN went to be with the Lord, Sunday, September 6, 2009, following a brief illness at Sycamore Shoals Hospital, Elizabethton, TN.

Mrs. Taylor was born in Mountain City, TN, lived in Elizabethton, TN, was employed by American Air Filters, and was a member of New Zion Faith Center, Johnson City, TN.

Mrs. Taylor is survived by her loving husband, Earl Taylor, sisters, Clara Spurgeon, New Brunswick, NJ, Dimple Smith, Elizabethton, TN, two special friends, Pearl Smith and Ross Potter, also left to mourn her passing, are numerous relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Mary Widby and daughter, Sherry Taylor, her brothers, Norman, St. Clair, Monroe, Sam Ed and Harley Widby,. Mrs. Taylor was a mentor to all of her niece, nephews, and friends. She will be missed immensely by all that knew and loved her. Special thanks to the Emergency Room staff at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

LILLIAN  (FIELDS)  RYAN
 

 passed away on Sunday, September 6th, 2009 after a brief illness.

Lillian, born July 20, 1922, was the daughter of the late Maggie and Charles Fields of Lebanon, Virginia.  Lillian was a graduate of the Christiansburg Institute, a homemaker, and real estate agent.

 

She is preceded in death by her husband Sam C. Ryan of Abingdon, VA, and brothers Bascom, Elbert, Howard, Luther, and Fairbanks.

 

 Surviving Mrs. Ryan are her daughters Margaret Hannah Ryan and Mary Banks, five grandchildren, sister-in-law Eula Fields, and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

FUNERAL SERVICES

 

will be conducted at 7 PM on Friday, September 11, 2009, at Birchette Mortuary Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6 PM prior to the service. Graveside services will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, September 12, 2009,  at High Point Cemetery, Abingdon, VA.

EUGENE ELLIS GARDNER, JR.

 26, 1100 East Main Street, born April 8, 1983, went to be with the Lord, Monday, August 31, 2009. He was born and raised in New York City, was the son of the late Eugene Ellis Gardner, Sr. and Melissa Murray Gardner.

Eugene moved to Johnson City in 2006, where he met the love of his life. He attended Martin Luther King School and graduated from Casses Technical School in New York City.

Besides his father he was preceded by his grandparents, Lloyd and Lillian Gardner and grandfather, David Murray.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his mother, Melissa of Asheboro, NC, his grandmother, Eva Murray, Greenville, NC, his girlfriend, Courtney A. Gardner, Johnson City, two brothers, Marcellus Murray (Tomeka White), Asheboro, NC, and Dante Gants, Bronx, NY, a sister, Danielle Gardner (Mike Joseph), New York City, four nieces and two nephews, several aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends..

VIRGINIA SYLVERS

Mrs. Virginia Sylvers went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, the eleventh day of August, 2009. Mrs. Sylvers was a lifetime resident of Washington County, TN. She was the daughter of the late James S, and Margaret Keebler Bridwell.

She was a member of Bethel Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Jonesborough, TN. She was a retired educator in the Washington County School System. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Foster Sylvers, four brothers, James Jr., Clarence, Eldean and Herbert and a sister, Dorothy Rhea.

She leaves to mourn, a daughter, Sandra Virginia Sylvers, of the home, one sister, Edith Earleen Stewart, Murfressboro, TN, seven nieces and one nephew, a host of great, great/ great and great great, great, great, great nieces and nephew, cousins and friends. She also leaves a sister-in-law, Cue Esther Bridwell, West Palm Beach, FL.

CECIL EDWARD BROWN

     208 West 8th Ave., went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 7, 2009 at the North Side Hospital .  He was a Johnson City , Tennessee native and the son of the late Payton Brown, Sr. and Willie Mae Russaw Brown, and his step mother, Lillie Brown.

    He was preceded in death by his brother, William Payton Brown, Jr., sisters, Naneva Brown Young, Geraldine Brown, and Ella Mae Swindler, and son Brian Keith Vaughn.

    He was a faithful member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church for over 30 years and an active member of the deacon board. He served in the United States Army as a sergeant in the Korean War. He worked for Walker Furniture Company and Bailey & Ferguson Furniture Company for many years. He became an entrepreneur after leaving the furniture business and was the owner of Cecil Brown Grocery Store and Brown’s Rental Property. Cecil was always filled with energy and became an active walker later in life, while being devoted to Mount Olive Church as well as his community.

    He is survived by his wife, Queen H. E. Brown, sons, David K. Brown (Carmen), Cecil E. Brown II, Paul Crawford, and  Kenneth Smith, daughters Robin M. Hughes and Lori M. Hughes, a host of grandsons and granddaughters, nieces and nephews

will be held at 12 noon, Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at Mt. Olive Bapist Church, 810 Montomery St. with Pastor Charles Martin officiating. Burial to follow at the V. A. LEONARD RAYMOND THOMAS

Memphis. TN entered into rest on Tuesday, July 7, 2009 in Memphis, TN. He was born in Mountain City, TN to Katherine White Thomas and Raymond L. Thomas, Sr. on March 24, 1954.

He was a Science Hill High School graduate, became a manager of McDonalds. . He enlisted in the U. S. Navy and later became an air traffic controller. He married his high school soulmate, moved to Memphis and raised their boys.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Earnest Thomas, three brothers, Harry, Bobby and David Thomas.

Survivors include; two sons, Brian and Rico Thomas, four sisters, Mary, Brenda, Elaine and Janie. grandchildren, Mia and Raquan, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

FUNERAL SERVICES

 will be held at 12:30 PM, Friday, July 17, 2009 at Thankful Baptist Church, 1501 East Watauga Ave. with Rev. Vincent Dial officiating. Burial to follow at the V. A. National Cemetery, Mountain Home. The family will receive friends from 11:30 AM until 12:30 PM prior to the services at the church and at other times at the home of his sister, Elaine Brady, 113 West Chilhowie Ave.

MARY ELIZABETH MUSTON

 rested from her labor on Tuesday, June 30 at North Side Hospital. She was born on March 16, 1920, to parents Robert and Ollie Ray. She sold Tupperware and Avon to support her family. The latter she continued to sell and became top saleswoman in this area. She continued to sell Avon products to her loyal and faithful customers until she could no longer put the time and effort into her business. She also enjoyed bowling, at which she was very competitive. Mrs. Muston enjoyed her family and enjoyed the times they shared.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Ollie Ray; husband, Mr. Willie Muston; sister, Ruth Weaver; 3 brothers, Alvin, Robert, and Colice Ray; 2 nieces, Mary Elizabeth and Polly Ann; and 1 nephew, Freddie Eugene Weaver.

She leaves to mourn; 2 daughters, Starlet Williams and Lisa Jackson, Johnson City; 1 son, William (Nikita) Starnes, Nashville, TN; 1 sister, Donna Mae (John) Warren, Detroit, MI; 6 grandchildren, Willie E. Benson, Jr., Cleveland, TN; Wjualana Benson, Johnson City, TN, Sean Benson, Clarksville, TN; Hope (Bill) Tackett, Lutz, FL; John Jackson, Jr., Neoyshi (Charles) Johnson; 11 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, and special friends.

FUNERAL SERVICES

 will be held on Friday, July 3rd at 1:00 PM at Birchette Mortuary, "Chapel of Love". Burial to follow at Washington County Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11 AM to 1 PM also on Friday at the mortuary. All other times will be at the home of Ms. Muston, 512 Wilson Avenue.

PEARL MACHEN DAVIS

Mrs. Pearl Esther Machen Davis, 53, of Barboursville, Virginia, departed this life on Wednesday, November 4, 2009, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
She was born July 13, 1956, to the late Reverend David M. and Ida Ola Mae Green Machen in Elizabethton, Tennessee. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Lydia Machen; and a brother, Sam Machen.
Mrs. Davis was a member of the Blue Run Church Barboursville, where she served faithfully as Minister of Music and worked with many Community Choirs, as Choir director and music teacher for those seeking to play the piano.
She is survived by her husband, Gregory Davis; one son, Marques L. Davis; two daughters, Olacynth N. Davis and Cadessa M. Davis; and one granddaughter, Kyra M. Davis, all of Barboursville; eight brothers, David and Joel Machen of Houston, Texas, James and Jonathan Machen of Minnesota, Dan Machen of Germany, Nathaniel Machen of Miami and Mark Machen of Daleville, Matthew of Knoxville, TN, five sisters, Mary Johnson of Gary, Tennessee, Ann Pritchard and Dorcas Michealson of Minnesota, Ida Machen of Kingsport and Denise Anthony of Frederick; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.


SERVICES


A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, November 9, 2009, at the First Baptist Church, 738 Park Street, Charlottesville with the Reverend Peggy Brice officiating. Interment will follow at the Davis Family Cemetery in Barboursville.
Viewing will be held at the funeral home from 12 until 8 p.m. Sunday, November 8, 2009, and at the church from 1 until 2 p.m. Monday, November 9, 2009.

ROSA CARSON
 
Mrs. Rosa Carson was born on May 6, 1917 in Marion, North Carolina.  She was the second of seven children born to the late Edward and Virginia Murphy.

Rosa attended grade school and high school in Johnson City, Tennessee.  She met and married the late Hugh Carson in Washington D.C., and out of their union three children were born: Olivia and Jimmy, who preceded her in death, and Charles.  Rosa and family relocated to Detroit, Michigan where she resided and worked as a direct care worker until the age of 89. She was a devoted wife, mother and employee.

Mrs. Carson was raised as a Christian but later joined the Nation of Islam in 1955, where she devoted her time, life and prayer as a Muslim. 
 
Rosa had friends that she loved and who loved her dearly.  She was cheerful, with a great sense of humor, and was most generous to everyone.  She loved her friends and family unconditionally, and gave all that she could to help and to nurture. After the death of her daughter Olivia in 1969, Rosa assumed guardianship and raised her grandson Damon Brooks as her son.

On October 22, 2009, Rosa departed from this earthly realm.

Rosa was preceded in death by sister, Geneva Murphy Woolwine, and brothers, Robert, Joe, and Clarence Murphy.  She leaves to mourn her, son, Hugh Carson (Charles) and grandson, Damon Brooks, 1 daughter-in-law, Cassandra Carson, 2 sisters, Hattie Session and Margaret Bumbray and 1 brother-in-law, George Bumbray. In addition, she leaves 4 grandchildren, Yvette, Monique, Charles, and Serena, 3 great grandchildren, Andrena, Sasha and Jordan, and 1 great-great grandson.  She also leaves to cherish her memory a host of nieces, nephews and close friends.
